Terms and safety
HikesAlike is a free tool for finding ideas for hikes, from day hikes to multi-day tours. Using it means accepting these terms.
What the data can and cannot tell you
- The hiking routes come from OpenStreetMap, which is crowd-sourced: a route can be wrong, incomplete, out of date or no longer passable.
- The measures are estimates: length, elevation gain, steepness, land cover, climate and drive time are computed from map, elevation and climate data, and can be far off. Difficulty grades (SAC) are copied from OpenStreetMap tags as mappers entered them.
- The site does not show trail conditions, closures, weather, snow, avalanche danger or other mountain hazards.
Stay safe
- Do not use this site for navigation. Plan with an up-to-date map, check the conditions, closures and weather forecast with local sources before you go, and turn back when in doubt.
- Choose hikes that suit your fitness, experience and equipment. You are responsible for your own safety.
- In an emergency, call 112, the European emergency number. In the Croatian mountains, 112 reaches the HGSS (Hrvatska gorska služba spašavanja, the Croatian Mountain Rescue Service); elsewhere, 112 reaches the local rescue services.
No warranty
The site and its data are offered as they are, free of charge, with no guarantee that they are correct, complete or available. To the extent the law allows, the operator is not liable for any loss or injury that comes from using them. Nothing here limits liability that the law does not allow to be limited.
Using the data
You may reuse the data shown here under its licences, with no further restriction from this site:
- The hike data is a derivative database of OpenStreetMap, offered under the Open Database License (ODbL).
- The elevation profiles and the values derived from elevation (heights, gain, profile shape, steepness, slope aspect) are adapted from FABDEM and shared under CC BY-NC-SA 4.0, non-commercially.
- The other sources and their licences are listed in Data and credits.
The server limits how many requests one client can send per minute, so that a small server stays up for everyone; it is not a limit on what you may do with the data. The code that builds the data is open source under the MIT licence.
